How will peak oil affect New Zealand, a small country relative to Canada but with only four million people and fertile soils? Will NZ be able to find independence and self sufficiency if the worst fears of peakists are realised? How will it cope compared to an over populated country of similar size such as the UK or Japan?

NZ is not as dependent on fossil fuels as most countries. It has a predominately aggrecultural economy, livestock, dairy etc. The main source of power for NZ residents comes from hydro-electricity (around 80%). Year round temperatures are above 10 deg C.
Could be safe from peak oil, we must wait to see.

There's no way to possibly fraud P.O. into existence. If anything, the motivation of Big Oil, OPEC countries, and the ruling/political class in north america would be to deny/delay it. The sooner people start lowering demand, the sooner they all lose money.

Don't get caught up in the "no way" syndrome   since last you posted here several major "new strikes" have been reported most larger than what is claimed to be in the Mid-East

P.O. as a phenomenon is too wide spread with too many independent agents/actors contributing data all over the world. It may be that there are a few large fields that have been discovered lately... but a lot of the reserves they represent is still largely unknown as well. The fact is that in a given area of conventional oil, once you've sucked out half what's in the ground, it doesn't matter how much more you drill, your production rates will plateau and then begin a gradual, irreversible decline on the order of 1 to 3 % a year. It's the same for a state/province, as it is a country and indeed the world. This has to do with the realities of geological formations, air pressure, fluid dynamics and other principles that people a lot smarter than me understand completely.

Until these new major strikes are up and running with some serious production capacity, we can't count on them.

This is what I don't understand about the people who feel that P.O. is a conspiracy theory or fraud.

Even if it IS, we are better off conserving our energy and investing in alternatives and better urban design for our cities anyways.
