Welcome aboard.

I'm not much for arguments either.  Healthy debate, provocative exchanges -- yes!

argument (REASON)   Show phonetics
noun [C or U]
a reason or reasons why you support or oppose an idea or suggestion, or the process of explaining them

Hell ya!

http://www.etymonline.com/

This is a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English. Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2,000 years ago.

The dates beside a word indicate the earliest year for which there is a surviving written record of that word (in English, unless otherwise indicated). This should be taken as approximate, especially before about 1700, since a word may have been used in conversation for hundreds of years before it turns up in a manuscript that has had the good fortune to survive the centuries.

The basic sources of this work are Weekley's "An Etymological Dictionary of Modern English," Klein's "A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the English Language," "Oxford English Dictionary" (second edition), "Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology," Holthauzen's "Etymologisches Wörterbuch der Englischen Sprache," Ayto's "20th Century Words," and Chapman's "Dictionary of American Slang."

argue
1303, from O.Fr. arguer, from L. argutare "to prattle" freq. of arguere "to make clear, demonstrate," from PIE *argu-yo-, from base *arg- "to shine, be white, bright, clear" (see argent). Colloquial argufy is first attested 1751. Argument "proof, evidence" is from 1382; sense of "debate" is from 1494. Argumentative "fond of arguing" is from 1667.

As with many words there are multiple definitions Context counts

Remember that it is not he who reviles you or strikes you, who insults you, but it is your opinion about these things as being insulting. When then a man irritates you, you must know that it is your own opinion which has irritated you. Therefore especially try not to be carried away by the appearance. For if you once gain time and delay, you will more easily master yourself

The last person that took an unwarrented run at me because he took offence when none was given proved himself to something other than what he presented.
Argument is a legitimate forum of discouse

"i dont mean to tell a fellow his business about what he or SHE posts. but..."

as an educated person you will have knowledge  on the use of "but" is a 'negator' You make the claim to NOT do the very thing you stated you wouldn't do

"plus its a great way to meet new folks. im not much for arguments, but you learn from others ideas and insights. and hopefully share my ideas that some may not agree with. but will make you think i hope.  "
I welcome your ideas and previous post is to show there are othe ways to look at language
whatever burr you have under your saddle
 was brought here
Those who are so quick to take offence when none was given or intended
 puzzle me.

When there is no agreement on language there is cross communitation and on forums flame wars follow.
 I ain't into it .

Ah, you do kill me, Dio.  8)

Tell me though, do you have the little 'blame it on the offended' speech saved somewhere so you can just cut and paste it when you need it, or is it so well rehearsed that it comes out identical everytime?  Either way it says something that you need it so often.  I mean, that's the second time in 24 hours that you said the some thing.  Word for word.  Verbatim.

What an element of irony Dio has brought into this thread!

I'm sure Dio understands that the context in which we used "argument" was not in the logical or reasoning sense, but in the sense of needless contention.  Exploiting semantical ambiguity.  Boring.

My point was that I will avoid type of argument that is synonymous with needless contention.

The word in question offers enough ambiguity of definition i felt that aspect required further clarification.
From a linguistic perspective the semantic feature(s) of any given word is of great importance. How does one, then make definitive statements about ambiguity of words?
Or, is it as my lawyer friends claim that he precision and exquisiteness of language contributes to broader forms of communication?

c.b, nine-twelve  leapt to a false conclusion and the offered a threatening warning, and by doing so made the decision to do exactly counter to what he claimed, " im not much for arguments," I know that behaviour as incongruent an as far a 'larnin' goes, it should never be terminal.
T Jefferson was right on more levels than most care to investigate - "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."
We 'could' argue about it  ;D
